A well-fed and dry baby will usually sleep well. However, that is not always enough. How Much Sleep Is Normal?
Deep, restorative sleep is essential for the regeneration of both body and mind. The amount of sleep needed depends on age and individual requirements. Some babies are naturally heavy sleepers, while others need less sleep.
During the first two months of life, babies typically need between 16 and 19 hours of sleep spread throughout the day and night, waking approximately every 2 to 3 hours. By the third and fourth months, sleep requirements decrease to around 15 to 18 hours. In the fifth and sixth months, babies generally need 14 to 16 hours, while between seven and eight months they require 13 to 15 hours. By their first birthday, most babies sleep between 11 and 14 hours per day. During this period, daytime sleep gradually consolidates into one longer midday nap.
Because babies depend entirely on their caregivers and have no concept of time, they feel safest when familiar people and sounds are nearby. When they feel alone, they can quickly experience separation anxiety or fear, which is not relieved by leaving them to cry. Concerns that babies cry to manipulate adults are unfounded, as such behaviour would require a level of self-awareness that babies have not yet developed.

Why Is Sufficient Sleep Important?
Sleep and pain perception are both functions of the brain. The amount and quality of sleep determine how effectively the body recovers and therefore greatly influence overall well-being. Sleep deprivation can lead to concentration difficulties, irritability, chronic fatigue, lack of motivation, frustration, depression, restlessness, emotional imbalance and aggression.
Several naturally occurring substances are involved in regulating sleep. During deep sleep, also known as the non-REM phase, the body releases growth hormones and activates the immune system. The skin regenerates overnight, and the liver even requires complete darkness for optimal recovery. One theory suggests that a substance called hypnotoxin accumulates during wakefulness, increasing the need for sleep before being broken down and eliminated during sleep. Sleep-regulating substances such as Factor S and DSIP promote non-REM sleep, while REM sleep phases may involve proteins released in the brainstem that help regulate this stage.
Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation
Sleep disorders can result from unfavourable conditions such as room temperature and environmental noise, or from deficiencies in natural sleep-regulating substances including DSIP, prostaglandin D2, interleukins, melatonin or Factor S. Illnesses involving fever, inflammation or pain can also affect both sleep quantity and quality.
Irregular sleep phases are not necessarily a sleep disorder, as sleep patterns change frequently during childhood development. However, persistent difficulties falling asleep over a longer period may develop into a sleep disorder. Keeping a sleep diary can provide valuable clues.
Sleep deprivation can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression, even in children, and may accelerate the ageing process.
What Are Sleep Disruptors?
Sleep disruptors can be divided into physical causes such as pain, fever, illness, blue light exposure, dreams, cold feet and digestive problems, as well as psychological causes such as stress, anxiety and depression. Most of these factors can be minimised or avoided.
The blue light emitted by screens and LED lamps mimics daylight, delaying melatonin production and disrupting the body’s internal clock. When blue light no longer reaches the melanopsin cells in the eye, the pineal gland releases the sleep hormone melatonin and switches the body into night mode. This phenomenon may also help explain spring fatigue: after the darker winter months, melatonin stores can become saturated, resulting in increased levels entering the bloodstream. Researchers are also discussing whether chronic exposure to radiation from electronic devices may contribute to oxidative stress in the skin and potentially impair important bodily functions.
Dreams play an important role in processing experiences and emotions. They occur during REM sleep, the first stage of the sleep cycle. REM sleep is a light sleep phase that can last up to 30 minutes and is often recognisable by movements beneath closed eyelids. During this phase, babies particularly need peace and quiet. Unlike adults, babies spend approximately 50% of their sleep time in REM sleep. Evolutionarily, this likely functioned as an internal family warning system. Babies, being the most vulnerable family members, relied on light sleep to awaken and cry when in need of protection. Because babies dream more frequently, they may also experience more nightmares, sometimes waking up crying rather than screaming. This can occasionally lead to an aversion to sleep and difficulties falling asleep.
During non-REM sleep, characterised by deep, regular breathing, fewer dreams occur and the body focuses on biological processes related to growth, cell regeneration and repair. A moderate level of background noise generally does not disturb this phase and may even provide subconscious reassurance that familiar people are nearby. Sudden loud noises, however, can significantly disrupt sleep.
The digestive system of a baby is functional but still immature. Breast milk is therefore the ideal food. As foods become more complex, digestion becomes more challenging for the still-developing digestive system. This can result in gas, intestinal irritation, bloating and discomfort. Pay attention to what and when your baby eats, as nutrition can also influence sleep quality.
B vitamins can have a relaxing effect, while tryptophan supports sleep. Tryptophan is found in foods such as oats, cashew nuts and bananas. Together with vitamins B3 and B6 and relaxing magnesium, it helps the body produce serotonin. Interestingly, bananas naturally contain all of these substances. As a purée, they are easy to digest and suitable for babies after weaning. One final note about sugar: it acts as a stimulant and has the opposite effect of what is desired before bedtime.
Stress is a broad term covering many different influences that negatively affect adrenaline levels. These may include everyday hectic schedules, time pressure, performance expectations, anxiety, insecurity or uncertainty. Even well-cared-for babies are not immune to stress. Babies possess highly sensitive senses and can perceive even subtle tension in their surroundings, reacting according to their own level of resilience.
Even the guilty conscience of working parents, who want to make up for lost time with their children in the evening and therefore delay the baby’s sleep schedule, can affect both the quality and quantity of their child’s sleep.
The impatience of working parents with the pace or needs of their children, as well as their nervousness, lack of concentration and inner restlessness, can also negatively impact a healthy sleep environment.

What determines a baby's sleep rhythm?
No baby in the world would voluntarily leave the womb if the lack of space did not eventually force it to. Suddenly everything is bright, cold and busy, and every baby first has to get used to the fact that there is such a thing as day and night – a highly sophisticated and sensible invention of nature. Every human body is connected to the rhythms of nature in its own unique way, whether through tides, seasons or daylight cycles. Melanopsin is also found in subcutaneous fat tissue, suggesting that blue light may influence the body through the skin as well.
Through their biological rhythm, people respond to their individual sleep needs and preferred sleeping times. These differences are often described as larks and owls – morning people and evening people. Babies are born with their own natural rhythm already in place.
Sleep aids for young babies
Familiar things can help a baby fall asleep. These include sounds known from the womb, a feeling of enclosure and gentle rocking movements.
During the first months of life, old wall clocks or ticking alarm clocks can help babies fall asleep. The regular ticking reminds them of their mother's familiar heartbeat and creates a deeply calming effect. Babies also recognise the sounds they heard in the womb, often referred to as white or pink noise. The soothing rocking sensation familiar from the womb can be recreated with a spring cradle. The gentle movement automatically restarts when the baby moves, helping them settle back to sleep. Kurt Felix once said: “The most beautiful memories are the moments for which we took the time.” Bedtime routines are gifts of time. They satisfy a child’s need for structure, help regulate the internal clock and create a sense of security.
A bedtime routine can include finger games, a goodnight kiss, a rhyme, a prayer, a lullaby, a bedtime story or a quiet conversation about the day's events. Observe what truly helps your baby and learn to understand their language, signals and needs. There are many wonderful possibilities to explore.
Physical contact and eye contact are essential conditions for healthy growth and development. Carrying, holding, cuddling and looking at a baby create reassuring feelings of protection and belonging. Gentle tummy massages, even when there are no digestive issues, as well as foot or reflexology massages, can also provide comfort, closeness and security. The calm breathing of a parent often encourages the baby to relax and breathe more calmly as well.
Cold feet can slow down the sleep-promoting substance DSIP, a peptide that increases REM sleep and regulates body temperature. Pre-warming the bed or sleeping bag, or using cosy bed socks, can therefore be comforting sleep aids for your baby. A foot bath with a cup of lemon balm tea and a little chat about the most important events of the day can become a wonderful evening ritual and a lovely way for small children to end the day.
A baby sleeps best when the surroundings are pleasant. Aroma lamps with mild orange or lemon balm oils can also help. A tea made from sleep-promoting herbs such as lemon balm, orange blossom, oats, lemon verbena or horsetail can help with falling asleep. Be careful with orange juice, however, as its fruit acid stimulates circulation and can therefore have an energising effect.
For your baby’s sleep rhythm and overall health, sufficient movement and enough blue light at the right time of day are essential. Spending time outdoors has many benefits: daylight contains blue light, the skin can absorb the important hormone vitamin D, jumping and bouncing support bone development, and fresh air supports lung function.

Sleep is delicate at every age
During the magical years between the ages of two and five, when fantasy and reality merge, monsters crawl under the bed and ghosts hide in the wardrobe. Logical arguments and verbal reassurance are usually ineffective here. Together with your child, find an equally magical formula to chase unwanted night-time visitors out of the sleeping area. This gives your child comfort, the certainty of your support and confidence in their own ability to protect themselves. Only then can they fall asleep peacefully.
The subject of sleep and your baby’s sleep rhythm will certainly concern you again during puberty. It is worth preparing for this and staying relaxed.
